God said to Moses, “I AM who I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” — Exodus 3:14
Reflections: Do you know God’s name?
⠀⠀
When we are introduced to someone new, we might ask their name, right?! But when Moses asked about God’s name in the famous story at the burning bush, he didn’t say “what is you name”, he more accurately asked God; “what is the significance of your name?” Let me explain.
⠀⠀
In Hebrew, Moses asked “mah shemo” (מהו שמה, pronounced “MA share-mo”), which means “what does your name mean?” And God answered the question by saying “I AM who I AM”. In Hebrew, this is the phrase “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh” (אהיה אשר אהיה, pronounced “eh-YEH ash-HAIR eh-YEH”), which can be translated several ways including “I exist”, or “I will exist”, or “I will be”, or even “what I am I will be”.
⠀⠀
God was making the point that he is the God who was, who is, and will always be—he does not change. God is constant.
⠀⠀
And the significance of this for us is that all the character traits and attributes God has in the Bible are what he still has today. As one author reminds us, “God’s name is a stand-in for his character”.
⠀⠀
So, because we know God had compassion in the time of the Bible, we can be confidant he will have compassion for us today.
⠀⠀
As theologian Dr Tony Evans says, “God’s name covers all: past, present, and future. He’s got you covered”.
⠀⠀
So how amazing is that to know? God is the I AM in your life. He’s got you covered!
