*Sabbath School Summary*

*The Flood*
*Lesson 4*
Memory Text: Matthew 24:37
*SABBATH:* In every age, there have been two classes of men; sinners & the righteous, Cain & Abel/Seth, the sons of men & sons of God, and the rest of mankind & Noah. God would want us to be the latter. Years after the Fall, God “saw” the evil deeds of man in contrast to the “good” at Creation (Gen. 6:5, 6, 7). Yet, He felt sorry (in Noah’s name; meant comfort) for man as He was to judge man (Gen. 5:29).
*SUNDAY:* God declared to Noah His intent to build an ark to save the obedient & destroy the world. Like Daniel, He was to predict the world’s end (Gen. 6:13-7:10). Noah obeyed God & built an “ark”; tevah (same word used for the ark that hid infant Moses). The ark’s form was like the ark of the covenant (all were God’s sign of salvation; Exod. 2:3, 25:22, PP, p. 92, Heb. 11:7, James 2:20, see Gen. 6:8).
*MONDAY:* The story of the Flood reads like that of Creation (Gen. 7). In both, we find; “make” (Gen. 1:7, 16, 25, 26, 31; 2:2), “seven” (Gen. 7:2, 3, 4, 10; 2:1-3), “male & female” (7:2, 3, 9, 16; 1:27), “after its kind” (Gen. 7:14; 1:11, 12, 21, 24, 25), “beasts,” “birds,” “creeping things” (Gen. 7:8, 14, 21, 23; 1:24, 25), & “breath of life” (Gen. 7:15, 22; 2:7). The Flood points to future salvation (Rev. 21:1; Isa. 65:17).
*TUESDAY:* After the 150 days of the Flood (Gen. 7:22-24). “God remembered” His weary voyagers. The phrase meant more than a mental exercise. It’s God acting on His promise & His salvation (Gen. 8:1; 19:29). He “stopped” the flood (Gen. 8:2; 16). Noah didn’t wait to hear from God before testing if outside was safe. But when He got to know, He waited for God’s signal (see Gen. 8:15-19, PP, p. 105).
*WEDNESDAY:* God’s covenant with Noah amid His threat to send flood was a promise of life. When at last the door of the ark was opened, Noah gave a thanksgiving offering to God on the Sabbath (Gen. 6:17, 18, Num. 15:1-11). It was the first of its kind. Adam & Eve worshipped God directly but Noah did so in a form of a sacrifice. Man could eat animal flesh but not all animals or blood (Gen. 9:2-4; 8:19, 20; 1:21, 24).
*THURSDAY:* God’s grace is what preserves our world, not human merits. He pledged that as long as the earth remains, there’d always be life. Thus, He has not given up on His creation (Gen. 8:21-9:1). He gave the world a new start (Gen. 1:22, 28; 2:3). God sealed the covenant with a sign of a rainbow. The rainbow echoes the Sabbath (Gen. 9:8-17; 9:13). Both signs are universal (Exod. 31:12-17).
*FRIDAY:* The sins in the world now are not different from the sins of the antediluvians. Men loved gold & silver, self-glory & pride. God was banished from their hearts & His law desecrated. God’s wrath was on them not because of food, drink, cloth or marriage, but the abuse of it. Men engaged in fraud, bribery, theft, & murder. The same occurs today. Sadly, crimes exist in Christian lands & circles.

Keywords
PP- Patriarchs and Prophets
Antediluvians- People who lived before the Flood
Ark of the Covenant- Also known as the Ark of the tabernacle, it signified God’s presence in the midst of His people.
The Flood- It was essentially the reversal of the Creation. The God who creates is the same as the God who destroys (Deut. 32:39).
Rainbow- God will look upon it & will remember His everlasting covenant of not destroying the world again with a flood. In heaven, a rainbow encircles the throne and overarches the head of Christ.

Discussion Questions
📌 What are the common characteristics of the pre-Flood society and ours? What do these common characteristics teach us about God’s grace, that, despite all this, He loves the world and is, still, seeking to save whom He can?
📌 Some people argue that Noah’s flood was only a local event. What is wrong with that idea? If this were true, why would every
local flood (and every rainbow) make God a liar?
For April 16-22. Happy Sabbath.
